We were not sure what to expect from Hull, it was more or less on the way to Manchester, so we drove across country, with a small diversion from the main road, which showed us about 10 miles of unexpected countryside. Very green and lush, so different from home.
The first thing that we saw in Hull was the Trinity Church which claims to be the largest in England, according to the floor space and dates from 1300. Unlike the York Minster, in this church you were free to wander around and look at all the contents. I must admit, we found this much more satisfying and just so much to take in.
My quote of the day was from one of the ladies who sell postcards in the church. "What brings you to Hull, do you have relatives here?" When I said that we were just passing through, she replied "No one passes through Hull, it is not on the way to anywhere".
I was very impressed with the marble carvings here. The picture below is dedicated to a man who spent his life at sea, and made a considerable fortune. He bequeathed his estate to the care of seamen and they had this made in his honour.
Of course there is the inevitable statue of Queen Victoria in the town centre, but to my amusement the banner on the Town Hall behind me is advertising the local theatre show for Calendar Girls. I am not sure that Queen Vic would be "amused".
We visited a local Art Gallery, which had a wonderful display of artwork and the opportunity to have a nice afternoon tea.

The Tourist Information office pointed us to a fabulous B&B where we have spent a very comfortable night, the Earlsmere Hotel. We had dinner at the Lark and Linnett pub, and I think there was also a "pint" at the Tam O Shantar.
Breakfast in this room at the B&B is not hard to take.
Off today to Manchester, via Oldham. It is Andy's turn to do the driving, I have a bit of knitting to finish ... yes I know, the nieces in Scotland requested a scarf each, so Jo's is done and Nikki's is 70% complete. After a visit to the Post Office everyone will be happy.
