Penrith ... yes there is one over here too!

Sunday 22nd May 2011 - Gretna

We had a lovely overnight stay with Aunty Betty and Uncle Charlie in Gretna, on the border of Scotland and England. As usual their home is very warm and welcoming, and we caught up on lots of family stories.

Andy cooked salmon for dinner which went down very nicely. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with the washing. Very mundane I know, but when you only have five sets of clothes, it is important :-)

Monday 23rd May 2011 - Penrith

We then headed off to Penrith in search of goodies. Britain is chock a block full of gorgeous old towns, all with clock towers in the centre and quirky little shops. The wind was biting, and we found out that it was up to 85 mph, no wonder our poor little hire car was being buffeted on the Awhatever highway we were on.

After Penrith we headed for York. I have to admit, we ended up in a somewhat "interesting" hotel overnight. We were sick of driving and it looked OK. As the girl at the bar said, it is very basic, and yes it was cheap. Judge for yourself

Dinner at the same hotel was quite palatable, and the bed was comfy, even though our feet hung over the end. Today we are about to tour through York, which is a beautiful town.

We started the day with breakfast at the Perky Peacock, nice view over the canals. Hard to see but lots of ducks and geese paddling along with their babies.

Barges on the canal.

A great opportunity to take advantage of the free wi fi and add to the blog. Good coffee at the place too.

Off now to explore York, starting with the York Minster. And yes James, there is a railway museum here, postcard on its way.
